Missouri Western State University
STAND Alliance
STAND represents Students Together Addressing Nicotine Dependence. We are a peer education program that promotes awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke. STAND
peers work to decrease smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke in our community through education, advocacy, and community involvement.
STAND students encourage their peers to learn about the many health risks attributed to secondhand smoke, the lies used by the tobacco industry to recruit new smokers,
and how to take advantage of cessation services available on our campus. STAND students also work with campus and community leaders to advocate for healthy smoke-free
environments.
STAND is funded through a grant by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Who are STAND Peer Educators?
STAND peers are undergraduate students who receive extensive training in community education, advocacy, and involvement.
What does STAND do?
- EDUCATION: STAND provides educational pamphlets, articles, websites, interactive programs and other information to promote awareness of the dangers of
tobacco products and how to access resources available for those who want to quit. You may come to the Student Health Center at any time to obtain resources or to
talk to someone if you are thinking of quitting.
- INVOLVEMENT: STAND peers collaborate with other peer groups to promote awareness on campus and in the community. They sponsor and participate in activities
such as educational tabling at health fairs, community activities, and the Great American Smokeout.
- ADVOCACY: We are available to speak to your group or organization. Please request your program at least two weeks in advance. We are a relatively new
organization, and the advance notice gives us time to coordinate.
How do I apply to be a STAND peer educator?
STAND is always looking for enthusiastic, motivated students interested in learning about and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. If you are interested, please contact
